Denver was founded in November 1858 as a gold mining town by rival groups of settlers from Kansas and Missouri. The town was named after James Denver, the governor of Kansas Territory, by General William Larimer, who claimed the land on the eastern side of Cherry Creek. The gold quickly dried up and the town became a supply hub for new mines in the mountains. Denver grew rapidly and became the political and economic center of Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West
